This caramel apple cider sangria is fall in a glass—cozy, a little sweet, and exactly what you want when the weather turns. Make this red sangria once and it’ll quietly take over every holiday gathering from now on.

I love a festive cocktail, but I’m also extremely lazy about it. I don’t know what to do with bitters or fancy liqueurs, and honestly, I don’t want to. That’s why sangria is my go-to: pour some wine, add some booze and juice, and call it a day. This caramel apple cider sangria mixes Garnacha, apple cider, brandy, and caramel vodka—it’s basically fall in a pitcher, no mixology degree required.

Want more fall cocktails to warm you up? This mulled wine with caramel vodka is basically a hug in a mug. The cranberry orange sangria? Peak festive. And honestly, a classic margarita belongs at the table year-round—I don’t make the rules.

What Is Red Sangria?

Okay, so we know this isn’t a traditional sangria. So let’s start at the beginning. Sangria started in Spain and Portugal and, at its core, it’s really just wine punch. Usually red wine (like Garnacha), something boozy (brandy or liqueur), fruit juice or club soda, and a bunch of chopped fruit (think strawberries, pears, peaches, citrus, raspberries—any fresh fruit!) that soaks up all the alcohol. So if you’re eating the fruit, maybe don’t stand up too fast.

Sangria doesn’t need to be traditional to be good. White wine, rosé, whatever — I like to have fun with it. I usually skip the added sweetener since juice does the job, but if you like it sweeter, throw in some simple syrup. No one’s judging.

Why You’ll Love This Version

  • No bartending skills needed. Just dump it all in a pitcher, give it a stir, and suddenly you’re the person who “makes really good drinks.”
  • It tastes like a grown-up version of caramel apples and cinnamon—nostalgic, but with booze.
  • Great for parties. People will fawn over what is now “the best red sangria”, and you’ll pretend it was a whole thing.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Ingredients

A full ingredient list with exact measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Red wine—I like to go with something fruity and chill-friendly like Garnacha (aka Grenache) or Tempranillo—low tannins, no bitterness, just good vibes. Spanish blends and Pinot Noir work too.
  • Apple cider—The key to really bringing fall to your glass with this sangria.
  • Brandy—You can even be a little extra and get an apple brandy to stay on theme.
  • Caramel vodka—My go-to is Smirnoff’s Caramel Kiss vodka. Pinnacle vodka has a salted caramel vodka that would also work.

Modifications

  • Want to switch it up and make it a white sangria? Try a dry white like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Sangria doesn’t need to be fancy, just drinkable.
  • No brandy? No problem. Use more of the caramel vodka.
  • Like it really sweet? You can add a sweetener, like 1/4 cup of simple syrup or even maple syrup, since we’re doing fall.
  • Add some star anise in there with your cinnamon sticks. They add a nice cozy flavor and look pretty floating around in your glass.

How to Make Caramel Apple Cider Sangria

Overhead shot of pitcher full of juice and apples with red wine being poured into it.

Step 1: Cut up your apples and place them into a large pitcher. Pour in the caramel vodka, apple cider, brandy, cinnamon, and cinnamon sticks, then give it all a good stir.

Step 2: Pour the entire bottle of wine into the pitcher. Give it another good stir, then pop it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve it.

Recipe Tip

Refrigerate the sangria at least an hour before serving—it’s better when chilled. You can make it up to a day before. If you need to serve it right away, add a few cups of ice to the pitcher to get it nice and cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the basic ingredients for sangria?

Sangria, in its simplest form, is a big-batch wine cocktail: red wine or white, some brandy or liqueur, and a bunch of fruit (oranges and apples are the usual suspects). Want to lighten it up? Splash in some sparkling water, tonic, lemon-lime soda, or apple cider in this case, and call it a day.

What wine is best for red sangria?

When it comes to red sangria, pick a wine that’s fruity, easygoing, and not too heavy on the tannins. Garnacha and Tempranillo are classics for a reason — they’ve got just the right balance of fruit and spice. Rioja blends? Also great. Merlot, Gamay, even Pinot Noir work if you’re into something a little lighter. Just skip anything big and bold like Cabernet Sauvignon — it’ll fight the fruit and nobody wins.

What alcohol is best for sangria?

Brandy’s the classic move. It adds cozy notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice. No need to break out the good stuff, either. Orange liqueur (Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Triple Sec—pick your fighter) adds citrusy sweetness and keeps things interesting. Want to mix it up? A splash of rum, especially spiced, gives it a little tropical energy. Vodka works too, especially in white sangria — very “whatever’s open on the bar cart” energy.

Storage

For best results, drink your homemade sangria within 2 days and keep it chilled in a glass pitcher with a lid. After that, the fruit starts to go mushy, and the flavors get a little sad.

Equipment

  • Large pitcher

Ingredients

  • 750 ml red wine, Garnacha is used here, but you could also use tempranillo, pinot noir, or zinfandel
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 cup caramel-flavored vodka
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced or cubed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 cinamon sticks

Instructions

  • Place the cut up apples into a large pitcher. Add the caramel vodka, apple cider, brandy, cinnamon, and cinnamon sticks to the pitcher; give everything a good stir.
  • Pour the entire bottle of wine into the pitcher and give it a quick stir, then refrigerate until you're ready to serve it. (At least an hour.)

Notes

Let the sangria chill for at least an hour before serving. Cold sangria just hits better. You can make it a day ahead, which is ideal. In a rush? Toss in a few big handfuls of ice.
