This Greek yogurt lime crema is one of those sauces I keep in constant rotation. It’s bright and tangy, with just enough cooling effect to tame anything spiced, whether that’s tacos, a grain bowl, or a pan of roasted vegetables. Swapping in Greek yogurt gives you a lighter take on the classic, plus a nice bonus of protein you wouldn’t get from the traditional version.

Lime crema is one of those sauces I always want more of than I make. For this recipe, I start with Greek yogurt, whisk in a good squeeze of fresh lime juice and a grated garlic clove, and I’ve got something tangy, bright, and silky enough to make anything taste better—tacos, crispy air fryer sweet potatoes, a bowl of chicken tortilla soup, whatever’s in front of you. You can buy it pre-made, sure, but it takes about five minutes to whisk together yourself, and homemade always tastes brighter.
A Few Good Reasons to Make This
- Customizable heat and brightness: you can push the lime harder, add a minced jalapeño or chipotle, adjust garlic to taste—store-bought is locked into one flavor profile.
- Better ingredients: homemade means no gums, stabilizers, or preservatives—just yogurt, lime, garlic, and a little salt. All brought together with a quick whisk.
- Cheaper: A tub of Greek yogurt plus a lime and a garlic clove costs a fraction of a jarred specialty sauce, especially if you’re making it often.
- Higher protein: Greek yogurt as the base gives you more protein than a sour-cream-based crema, which is great for adding extra protein to vegetarian dishes like these breakfast tacos with black beans or these chickpea taco bowls.
Tips From My Kitchen
I make mistakes so that you don’t have to! Here are some things I’ve learned while testing this recipe…
- Fresh garlic is pungent: so start with a small clove—about 1/4-1/2 teaspoon worth of grated garlic. You can always add more.
- What to consider before adding spices: Before you start reaching for chili powder or cayenne, think about what you’re actually pairing this with. Blackened shrimp tacos, for instance, are already doing plenty in the spice department—what they need is a simple lime crema to cool things down and let that blackening seasoning shine. Pile on more heat and spice here, and you’ve just muddled everything you were going for.
Ingredients at a Glance

A quick look at some of the essentials before we dive into the recipe:
- Greek yogurt: traditional crema is made up of heavy cream, buttermilk, or sour cream. I use Greek yogurt for extra tang and protein while also keeping things on the lighter side.
- Lime: fresh, always. And make use of that peel! Zesting is easy with a microplane. If you don’t have one, get one. You’ll love it—especially if you make homemade sauce often.
- Garlic: Another time the microplane comes in handy. Grated garlic is better distributed into a sauce. If you don’t have one, mince it as finely as you can.
Make It Your Own!
- Add some heat: a pinch or two of cayenne will amp things up.
- Garlic powder: anything with fresh garlic is best consumed within 3 to 4 days. If you want this to last longer, swap in garlic powder instead, and you’ll buy yourself a little more time—5 to 7 days, no problem.
- Play with the texture: keep it nice and thick for dipping, or add a bit of warm water (1 tablespoon at a time) to thin it out for drizzling.
- Other spices: chili powder, cumin, or chipotle powder can be fun additions. Just remember to consider the spices in the food you’re serving the lime crema with, as mentioned in my tips above.

Serve It With…
Tacos of all types. I love drizzling Greek yogurt lime crema over vegetarian breakfast tacos for an extra punch of protein, grilled mahi-mahi tacos, tacos with ground turkey, and spicy shrimp tacos.
Bowl meals also offer an opportunity for a saucy glow-up: think healthy burrito bowl, chicken fajita bowl, and street corn chicken bowls.
You can also jazz up veggies. Try it with oven-roasted broccoli, Parmesan-roasted zucchini, or air fryer sweet potatoes as a dipper.
Storage Tip
With fresh garlic, Greek yogurt lime crema will keep in the fridge for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container. With garlic powder, 5 to 7 days—maybe longer.

Greek Yogurt Lime Crema Recipe
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- Juice of 1/2 lime, more to taste
- Zest of one lime
- 1 small clove of garlic, grated or finely minced
- Pinch of sea salt, to taste
- 1-2 tablespoons of water, for thinning to your liking
Instructions
- Place the Greek yogurt into a small mixing bowl. Stir in the lime juice, zest, grated garlic, and salt. Keep stirring until all of the ingredients are well incorporated.
- To thin the sauce, stir in 1 tablespoon of warm water. Keep doing this until you reach the consistency you're looking for, but remember to add water bit by bit so you don't accidentally end up with a super runny crema.
