Homemade sauce doesn't have to be left for Sundays. This easy marinara sauce simmers for just 20 minutes and only requires 8 ingredients! It's perfect for your weeknight pasta. And as a bonus, it makes a darn good pizza sauce too.
1/4tspchili flakes (optional)—add more if you want it spicier
Instructions
Heat olive oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat.
Add the onions and sauté for about 2-3 minutes, or until tender. Stir in the garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
Add the crushed tomatoes, then increase the heat to medium-high to bring to a simmer (not a full boil). Once simmering, stir in the salt, oregano, basil, bay leaf, and chili flakes if using. Lower the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 15-20 minutes. Taste and adjust if needed.
Notes
If the sauce tastes too acidic or “tinny”, stir in 1/4 tsp of baking soda. This will neutralize the acidity in the sauce by raising the pH level, resulting in a smoother flavor. Wait a few minutes before tasting the sauce again.
