What to Serve With Beef Stir Fry

  • Seared bok choy is a fantastic side for any stir fry, and this recipe‘s flavors pair perfectly.
  • Smashed cucumber salad is cool, crunchy, and super nourishing.
  • If you like to start things off with a nice little bowl of soup, try my miso soup!

Ingredients

  • Sesame oil. This is where you’re going to get your infusion of sesame oil!
  • Sirloin steak strips. You can buy your steak already sliced into strips for convenience. The key is getting a tender beef cut, such as sirloin, tri-tip, top loin, shoulder cuts, and tenderloin.
  • Green bell pepper. A lot of beef stir frys on Chinese takeout menus include green bell peppers, and I think the slight bitterness and earthy flavor tend to go well with the rest of the flavors. Yellow, orange, and red bell peppers are sweeter, but could also be used if it’s your preference.
  • Garlic cloves. Every stir fry needs garlic!
  • Dry white wine. Adds nice flavor, but optional. You could use beef broth instead!
  • Soy sauce. This brings you ALL of the umami and really brings all of the flavors together.
  • Scallions. These always bring a nice zip to a stir fry. When using onions in East Asian recipes, I always go for scallions.
  • Ramen noodles. Both instant or fresh from an Asian market work with this recipe.
  • Sesame seeds. Toasted sesame seeds add a nice hint of nuttiness to the dish, and they make for a beautiful garnish—especially when you use both black and white!
  • Slivered almonds. Toasted almonds add crunch and warmth and it makes for such a delicious meal!

How to Make Beef Stir Fry

  1. Heat a dry skillet or wok over high heat. Once hot, bring the heat down a tad and add the sesame seeds, toasting them for about 2 minutes.
  2. Pop the sesame seeds into a small dish and set it aside.
  3. Repeat the first two steps with the slivered almonds.
  4. In the same skillet, heat the oil until it starts to shimmer. Add in the beef strips and cook for about a minute each side—just enough to brown the exterior.
  5. Add the bell pepper and garlic, and cook for about two minutes.
  6. Finally, add the wine, soy sauce, and scallions to the skillet.
  7. Let the liquid come to a simmer and let it go for about a minute to thicken, stirring occasionally.
  8. Add the Ramen noodles, toasted sesame seeds, and the toasted almonds.
  9. Toss to coat and enjoy!

Swaps & Alterations

  1. Green bell pepper can be substituted with any other variation—just keep in mind that yellow, orange, and red peppers are slightly sweet.
  2. You can use olive or avocado oil instead of sesame in a pinch; the meal will still be delicious!
  3. Soba noodles or rice can easily replace Ramen noodles here, just note the difference in cooking time.
  4. If you prefer to not cook with wine, use beef broth instead!

Ingredients

  • 2 TBSP sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 2 TBSP olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 lb sirloin steak strips Sometimes labeled as beef stir fry strips
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced into strips
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed and thinly sliced
  • 2 TBSP dry white wine
  • 4 TBSP low sodium soy sauce
  • 6 scallions, sliced into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 packages of Instant Ramen noodles, cooked Discard the flavored powder packet.

Instructions

  • Heat a dry skillet or wok over high heat. Once hot, bring the heat down a bit (to medium high) and add the sesame seeds. Let them toast, shaking the pan every so often to prevent burning, for about two minutes or until the sesame seeds starts to brown and become aromatic.
  • Transfer the sesame seeds to a small dish and set aside. Repeat this exact step with the slivered almonds. (Almonds will take a little bit longer to toast, which is why we're not toasting them together.)
  • Using the same skillet or wok, heat the oil until it shimmers. Add the beef strips and cook them for about a minute each side, just to brown the exterior.
  • Add the slices of bell pepper to the skillet, as well as the garlic. Continue to cook for about two minutes.
  • Add the wine, soy sauce, and scallions to the skillet and, stirring occasionally, let the liquid come to a simmer. Let it simmer for about a minute to thicken, but keep a close eye on it so that it doesn't burn.
  • Finally, stir in the Ramen noodles, toasted sesame seeds, and the toasted almonds; toss to coat. Enjoy!
